The government began distributing locally-made face masks to indigents, according to a DOH official.
The government had began rolling out the distribution of locally-made washable face masks to indigents, according to an official from the Department of Health (DOH).
This, as the threat of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) remained in the Philippines.
According to Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire, they sought to distribute 13 million face masks to indigents, adding that the distribution will run until they reached their target.
In a press briefing, Vergeire said that this was to encourage indigents to follow the minimum health standards and this was the reason why the national government would give out locally-manufactured face mask to Filipinos in this sector.
Vergeire also cited that some families may not afford to buy face masks.

In addition, Vergeire also encouraged local manufacturers to produce more face masks in order to help the government meet its target as soon as possible.
Moreover, Vergeire said that the “Bayanihan To Recover As One” bill — which was up for the President’s signature — prioritized procuring medical supplies from local manufacturers in order to help them deal with the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
