Netizens React to Lawyer’s Criticism of Chelsea Manalo’s Dark Skin
ATTY. WILFREDO GARRIDO – Netizens reacted to the lawyer’s criticism of Miss Universe Philippines 2024 Chelsea Manalo’s dark skin.
Chelsea Manalo, who represented the Philippines in Miss Universe 2024, did not make it into the top 12 during the coronation night in Mexico on November 17. However, she was named ‘Miss Asia’ and will represent the Miss Universe organization at events in Asia.
Atty. Wilfredo Garrido expressed disappointment with the Philippines’ choice of Chelsea, particularly due to her darker skin tone. He claimed that the country’s selection process went too far in picking a morena, saying it “went overboard” with Chelsea’s dark skin. He also criticized her gown and a tattoo inspired by Whang Od, stating that they didn’t follow “good taste.” He suggested that Miss Laguna, Alexandra Mae Rosales, would have been a better choice to represent the Philippines.
Garrido’s comments sparked debate, with some of his friends agreeing with him. One netizen defended Chelsea, pointing out her kindness and beauty but noting that judges often favor Caucasian or Hispanic contestants. She added that judges can’t truly see the inner beauty of candidates unless they get to know them personally.
Another netizen expressed disappointment over Chelsea’s performance, stating that she wasn’t noticed during the Miss Universe Philippines competition. Roxanne also mentioned that another member of the Manalo family won the People’s Choice award and garnered more attention. She observed that the mood of the crowd turned negative, with many leaving early, reflecting their discontent.
Despite the criticism, Chelsea received support from fans who praised her inner beauty and hard work. Her ‘Miss Asia’ title shows that she made an impact, even though she didn’t place among the top
