Snake 10 Times More Venomous Than Cobra Spotted During Flooding in CamSur

Snake With Venom Ten Times Stronger Than Cobra Found in Floodwaters in CamSur

CAMSUR – A snake believed to be a Chinese Sea Krait was spotted in the floodwaters caused by Tropical Storm Kristine, alarming residents stranded in Caramoan, Camarines Sur.

Roselyn Sarmiento Clores shared on October 22, 2024, that her family had just settled in for the night when they noticed the snake floating in the water outside their home. Reports indicate that the Chinese Sea Krait is ten times more venomous than a cobra, prompting warnings for people to avoid approaching it and to notify the authorities.

Despite its venomous nature, the official website of the Aquarium of the Pacific notes that sea kraits are typically not aggressive. However, this information has raised concerns among local residents who are already dealing with the impacts of the flooding. While Clores did not provide further details on the snake’s fate, its presence added to the distress of a community already affected by severe weather conditions.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Kristine (Trami) is currently located 200 km east of Casiguran, Aurora, with maximum sustained winds of 85 km/h and gusts up to 105 km/h. As of October 23, 2024, the storm is moving north-northwest at 30 km/h and is expected to make landfall over Isabela later tonight. Gale-force winds extending up to 850 km from the center pose a threat to various provinces across Luzon, with Wind Signal No. 2 issued for areas including Metro Manila, the Ilocos Region, and parts of the Bicol Region. Wind Signal No. 1 is also in effect for other regions, indicating strong winds that could impact life and property.

The storm is forecast to intensify into a severe tropical storm before landfall, with slight weakening expected while crossing Northern Luzon. However, re-intensification may occur once it emerges over the West Philippine Sea. Heavy rainfall and the risks of coastal inundation and storm surge are also significant concerns for low-lying areas. The public is advised to take precautions and heed evacuation orders from local authorities.
