Chavit Singson Eyes a Senate Position in the 2025 Elections
CHAVIT SINGSON – The former Ilocos Sur governor is running for senator as an independent candidate.
Luis Crisologo Singson, popularly known as Chavit Singson, is a businessman and retired politician born on June 21, 1941, in Vigan, Ilocos Sur. He has had a long political career, serving multiple terms as the governor of Ilocos Sur and as the mayor of Narvacan. Singson was also a member of the Philippine House of Representatives and has held various political positions since the 1970s. He is known for his significant role in the political landscape of the Ilocos region, coming from influential political families.
Singson gained notoriety in 2000 for publicly accusing then-President Joseph Estrada of corruption, which contributed to Estrada’s impeachment and ousting. Throughout his career, he has switched political affiliations among various parties and has supported several presidential candidates, including Manny Villar and the United Nationalist Alliance.
Aside from politics, Singson is involved in business, having founded the LCS Group of Companies, which includes ventures in telecommunications and automobile distribution. He is also known for his interest in sports, particularly shooting, and was previously associated with boxer Manny Pacquiao. Despite facing legal challenges and controversies, he remains an influential figure in both business and politics in the Philippines.
On October 7, 2024, he submitted his Certificate of Candidacy (COC) as he runs for senator as an independent candidate. He plans to advocate for jeepney modernization, as well as the use of e-bikes and e-trikes. He promises to provide “all” electric vehicles to drivers “without any down payment” if he wins, stating, “Ako nang bahala doon. ‘Di baleng malugi, basta para sa masa.”
Meanwhile, among the candidates who filed their COCs for senator include Wilbert Lee, David Chan, Alexander Encarnacion, Jose Montemayor Jr., and Janice Padilla on October 1; Erwin Tulfo, Jimmy Bondoc, Imee Marcos, and Vicente Sotto III on October 2; Jose Bunilla, Christopher “Bong” Go, and Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa on October 3; Jerome Adonis, Arlene Brosas, and Camille Villar on October 4; Warlito Bovier and Ben Tulfo on October 5; and Jimmy Bondoc and Pia Cayetano on October 6.
