Seaman Treats Friends and Bar Staff, Refuses to Pay PHP84K Bill
DESPEDIDA – A man, identified as ‘Adrian,’ was arrested along with a female companion after refusing to pay a PHP84,000 bill at a resto bar on Ramon Magsaysay Street, Sampaloc, Manila, over the weekend. The incident occurred during Adrian’s farewell party before he was to embark on a ship as a seaman. Adrian invited his friends and even treated the bar staff to an open-bar session, claiming he would cover everyone’s expenses.
Police Major Philip Ines of the Manila Police District reported that Adrian arrived at the bar with a female companion and announced that he would treat everyone, including the bar employees. Adrian initially stated that his budget was PHP15,000. However, he continued ordering drinks even after surpassing this amount, with the running bill reaching PHP21,000.
The agreement was for Adrian to settle the bill between 1:00 AM and 3:00 AM, but by that time, the bill had escalated to PHP70,000. By 3:00 AM, the bill had climbed to PHP83,480. When the waiter approached Adrian and his companion to discuss the payment, Adrian became angry and assaulted the waiter, suspecting he wouldn’t be able to pay the hefty bill.
Following the altercation, the resto bar staff sought assistance from the Sampaloc Police Station, resulting in the arrest of Adrian and his female companion. Reports from ABS-CBN and GMA indicated that Adrian refused to pay the bill, and the woman explained that she had merely accompanied him on a date to the bar. Both suspects are now facing charges of estafa (fraud) and physical injuries.
The incident highlights the consequences of spending beyond one’s means, with Adrian’s attempt to impress his friends and the bar staff ending in legal trouble. Despite his initial claim of a PHP15,000 budget, his reckless spending led to an enormous bill that he ultimately could not pay, resulting in a confrontation and subsequent arrest.
