In One Hour, a Man in Ghana Hugs Over 1,000 Trees
GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS – An environmental activist from Ghana took on the challenge to break a world record by hugging over 1,000 trees in just one hour to emphasize the importance of trees.
According to Guinness World Records (GWR), the environmental activist and forestry student, 21-year-old Abubakar Tahiru, has been recognized as the record holder for the “most trees hugged in one hour.” Abubakar hugged 1,123 trees within an hour, which is almost 19 trees per minute. Thus, he surpassed GWR’s minimum requirement of 700 trees and became the first holder of this world record.
Abubakar shared with GWR that the record is significant to him because he grew up in a farming community in Tepa, Ghana, where he developed his interest in nature and conservation. After completing his undergraduate degree in forestry at a university in Ghana, he moved to Alabama, USA, last year to start his master’s degree in forestry at Auburn University.
Abubakar Tahiru’s attempt to set the world record for the most trees hugged in one hour took place at Tuskegee National Forest in Alabama. The Guinness World Records (GWR) specified that for the record, a tree hug must involve wrapping both arms around the tree without repeating hugs on the same tree or causing any damage to the trees, as either would disqualify the attempt.
Although Abubakar found breaking the record challenging, especially since he did not drink water because he was fasting for Ramadan at the time, he does not regret his attempt. Setting the world record for the most trees hugged in one hour was extremely rewarding for him. He emphasized that the achievement served as a significant gesture to underline the vital importance of trees in our ecosystem and the need for urgent environmental conservation.
