Lola killed in a drowning incident in Quezon
QUEZON – A 65-year-old grandmother was found dead after accidentally drowning in a water-filled tub at Sitio Core Housing, Brgy. Bagong Bayan in Mauban last Friday.
Drowning is a tragic and potentially fatal event that occurs when a person’s airway becomes submerged in water, disrupting their ability to breathe. When underwater, the body’s natural instinct to hold breath gives way to the urgent need for oxygen, leading to water inhalation and suffocation.
The consequences of drowning are severe, with the brain suffering irreversible damage within minutes of oxygen deprivation, often resulting in cardiac arrest and death. Survivors may experience long-term complications such as neurological impairments and respiratory difficulties.
Preventing drowning is crucial in reducing its incidence. Learning to swim and practicing water safety are essential skills that can save lives. Providing adequate supervision, especially for children, is vital near bodies of water. Using safety equipment like life jackets, particularly during boating or open water activities, is essential.
Public awareness campaigns, educational programs, and enforcing water safety regulations all contribute to creating a safer environment and preventing drowning incidents. Swift rescue and immediate administration of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) significantly increase the chances of survival and help minimize long-term complications.
