A bipolar disorder is a mental illness that causes sudden shifts in a person’s energy, mood, activity levels, and concentration.

According to the veteran broadcast journalist, one of the ways that she has been dealing with her mental condition is by going into sports such as joining marathons and triathlons.

Matagal ko na yong alam na I have bipolar disorder. And kapag meron kang ganung klaseng kondisyon, ‘yong manic depressive. One way para hindi naman ma-cure, pero mamanage mo ‘yong iyong mental health issues mo ay to go into sports,” she said. “To go into activities na nakakapagbigay ng natural endorphins.

While she needs to manage her hormones in order for her to control her mood, she said that she didn’t want to depend on medications. She added that she has been following the advice of her doctor — to “find activities that will release natural happy hormones.”

Kara also revealed that she started going to the gym and played badminton.

However, she said that she was advised to try swimming after injuring her knees by playing badminton. That’s where she met actor Onemig Bondoc, who was looking for a female swimmer to join their triathlon team at that time.

She also said that that she joined the triathlon as a swimmer, but she realized that she can run, and that’s the reason why she joined the triathlon as a swimmer and runner.
