After jumping from 3rd floor while escaping an “abusive” employer, an OFW in Kuwait has become paralyzed from waist down
OFW in KUWAIT – An overseas Filipino worker in Kuwait has become paralyzed from the waist down after jumping from a window on the third floor escaping her “abusive” employer.
The 34-year-old OFW going under the alias Mary has a damaged spine and a broken left foot. Mary is a Cagayan Valley native and a mother of two.
Mary recounted in an interview with ABS-CBN while lying on her hospital bed that on January 21, after completing her tasks, she was doing a Tik Tok live in her room when her female employer barged in.
“She started slapping me and pulling my hair. She confiscated my phone and kept asking me where I planned to go. I explained to her I was just resting and doing Tiktok but she would not listen. She kicked me on my back and locked me in the room,” she said
Mary, who was on the third floor, made the decision to flee after realizing she was in danger. Bystanders helped transport her to the hospital, where she is still recovering.
Her case against her employer will be handled by a lawyer assigned by the Philippine embassy in Kuwait. “We have already filed the case and we will do our best to get justice,” lawyer Zahra Shammouh said.
Earlier, Susan Ople, the secretary of the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) dismissed calls for a deployment ban in Kuwait. She stated that there will be discussions between the governments of Kuwait and the Philippines instead about tighter controls, quicker responses, and specific actions, particularly in response to pleas for rescue and assistance from OFWs in Kuwait.
