Retired boxing referee Carlos Padilla has these revelations about a fight of Manny Pacquiao back in the year 2000
CARLOS PADILLA – The legendary boxing referee admits that he cheated to help Manny Pacquiao win his fight against Australian Nedal Hussein in 2000.
On October 10, 2000, Pacquiao faced Hussein at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo City, where he was expected to easily win. Pacquiao was defending his WBC international super bantamweight title. However, Hussein proved to be a tough opponent, knocking Pacquiao out in the fourth round with a quick, sharp jab that left him dazed.
It was there that Padilla, who had already competed in a number of notable boxing matches, carried out his dirty work. According to Padilla, the mandatory eight-count, which is always administered after a boxer is knocked down, was given to Pacquiao for a longer period of time than usual.
The legendary boxing referee then admitted to another wrongdoing when he claimed that an ugly cut under Nadal’s left eye was caused by the Pacquiao punch rather than a head butt- an important distinction in boxing because gashes caused by legal blows result in a TKO victory for the fighter who delivered it if the fight is stopped by the doctor.
Hussein was disappointed when he learned of Padilla’s revelations. He said: “Honestly, after watching the referee video, it really hit a nerve. I was upset for a full 24 hours.”
Padilla, 88, rose to fame when he served as the referee in the “Thrilla in Manila” heavyweight fight between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. The historic match took place in 1975 at the Araneta Coliseum.
