According to the new law, Republic Act 11935, all incumbent SK and barangay officials must serve until their successors are elected or they are earlier suspended or removed for cause.

GMA News Online reported that the elected SK and barangay officials’ terms of office start at noon on November 30, 2023 and the next polls will then be held after 3 years.

Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Chairperson George Erwin Garcia said in a statement on Wednesday that they would comply with the law even as they continue with the preparations for the elections.

According to him, the postponement would allow the poll body to continue voter registration in order to ensure greater participation of citizens in the polls.

He mentioned that the poll body will release an announcement regarding an adjustment of the calendar of activities at the soonest possible time, adding that they will also revisit poll body’s existing and planned procurement contracts related to the barangay and SK polls and act accordingly with the best interest of all parties in mind.

This postponement also gives this Commission an opportunity to further institute education and information programs for the benefit of our electorate and prospective barangay and SK election candidates,” he said.

Garcia also said that they hope hopefuls for barangay and SK positions and the voting public would “take this time to prepare and reflect on their rights and duties which they will exercise through their ballots and eventual offices”.
