China might be ready to label US companies, including Apple, as an “unreliable entity” as payback for banning Huawei Technologies in the United States.
This, after US President Donald Trump announced that the ban on Huawei Technologies had been extended until May 2021, which means, Huawei cannot use US technology — including Google.
In a report from Global Times, a Chinese state-owned newspaper, China was reportedly ready to take a series of countermeasures against the United States.
Global Times’ source who was close to the Chinese government, in an exclusive interview, said that the country’s countermeasures would “protect its own legitimate rights”. Moreover, the said measures, according to Global Times’ source, would include implementing restrictions on or launching investigations into US companies — including Apple, Qualcomm, and Cisco — in accordance with China’s laws and regulations, suspending airplane purchases from Boeing, and adding related US companies into China’s “unreliable entity list”.
Apple, Qualcomm, Cisco, and Boeing were among the US companies that were highly dependent on the Chinese market.
“Unreliable Entity List”
The Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) in China previously announced that China would release its own list that would target foreign entities that seriously reduce the legitimate interests of Chinese companies.
Gao Feng, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Commerce, previously mentioned that the “unreliable entity list” would include the following:
- foreign organizations, individuals, and companies that would block or close supply chains, or take discriminatory measures for a non-commercial basis
- when the actions of foreign organizations, individuals, and companies would endanger the business of Chinese companies as well as its global consumers and companies
On the other hand, Zhi Luxun, the head of the Bureau of Industry, Security, Import and Export Control at the Ministry of Commerce, mentioned that the said list would also include the following:
- foreign entities that would cause actual or potential damage to companies and industries in China
- foreign entities that would endanger or potentially endanger the national security in China
As per the report, Zhi Luxun mentioned that those foreign companies that were included in the said list would face legal and administrative actions, adding that the Chinese public would also be warned against dealing with those foreign companies that were included in the “unreliable entity list” in order to reduce risks.
