ARLENE BROSAS – The Gabriela Party-list Representative called for compassion toward the “Sampaguita Girl” and others in similar situations. The appeal follows a viral video showing a security guard kicking the Sampaguita Girl and destroying her garlands. The guard has since been fired.
Brosas emphasized the need to understand why such incidents keep happening, advocating for empathy not only for the young vendor but also for the security guard. She highlighted the challenging economic conditions, with high prices and the financial strain on students. Brosas urged the public to refrain from vilifying individuals trying to survive and instead focus on helping them.
The police confirmed that the Sampaguita Girl is a legitimate student, not involved in any syndicate. Brosas stressed that she and her family need support, as they face public scrutiny and doxing, making it hard for her to appear in public.
Brosas also reminded security personnel to treat others with respect and avoid damaging their property. She pointed out that the security guard’s employer should be held accountable, ensuring staff are trained to handle situations properly without resorting to harm. The importance of systemic solutions, such as providing parents with decent jobs, was highlighted as a way to help children like the Sampaguita Girl.
