Mercy Sunot, Vocalist of Aegis, Passes Away
MERCY SUNOT – One of the lead vocalists of the OPM band Aegis passed away after battling breast and lung cancer.
The music industry mourns the loss of the member of the OPM band Aegis, who joined the Creator earlier today. Before her death, she shared her health condition with the public in an emotional TikTok video, asking for prayers.
She revealed that she underwent surgery due to breast and lung cancer. After the operation, she experienced difficulty breathing and was taken to the ICU, where doctors discovered fluid in her lungs and inflammation. Mercy received steroid treatment to prevent further inflammation. In the video, she tearfully asked her followers to pray for her speedy recovery, using hashtags #breastcancerwarrior and #lungcancerwarrior.
Her sudden passing left many heartbroken, including singer Laarni Lozada, who took to social media to pay tribute to her fellow singer. “One of my dreams was to have a duet/showdown with you. Since I was a child until now, in all my shows, whenever there is an out-of-town event, palagi nasa line up ko mga songs mo. Rest in peace, idol. Salamat sa iyong musika,” the singer wrote.
Meanwhile, Aegis is a Filipino rock band that was formed in 1995. Originally known as AG’s Soundtrippers, the group performed in clubs and lounges throughout Japan before changing their name to Aegis upon signing with Alpha Records in 1998. The name Aegis, which means “shield” or “protection,” reflects the band’s powerful presence in the music scene.
The band consists of sisters Juliet, Mercy, and Ken Sunot on lead vocals, with Rey Abenoja on vocals and guitar, Stella Pabico on keyboards, Rowena Adriano on bass guitar, and Vilma Goloviogo on drums. Aegis is best known for its rock ballads, with some of their most famous songs including “Halik,” “Sa Isang Sulyap Mo,” and “Luha.”
