NIÑA JOSE-QUIAMBAO – The mayor of Bayambang, Pangasinan, suggested that residents affected by power outages caused by Typhoon Kristine have a “candlelight date” to lighten the mood.
Niña Jose-Quiambao, whose real name is Mary Clare Judith Phyllis Atienza Jose, is an actress, model, and politician currently serving as the mayor of Bayambang, Pangasinan, since 2022. She first gained fame as a contestant on Pinoy Big Brother: Teen Edition 1 in 2006, which launched her acting career. She appeared in various television shows such as Sa Adventures of Pedro Penduko, My Girl, and Valiente, as well as movies like Shake, Rattle and Roll and Mano Po 6.
In 2016, she met and later married billionaire businessman Cezar Quiambao, with whom she has a son named Antonio. Throughout her husband’s tenure as mayor of Bayambang, she became involved in local projects, including advocating for abused women and children and supporting farmers. After her husband’s second term, Niña ran for mayor in 2022 and won, becoming the first woman to hold the office alongside a female vice mayor, Ian Camille Sabangan.
The actress-turned-politician is currently making rounds online due to her now-deleted post amid power outages in their area. The mayor of Bayambang, Pangasinan, suggested that residents affected by power outages caused by Typhoon Kristine have a “candlelight date” to lighten the mood. However, her attempt to bring some “good vibes” was met with heavy criticism from netizens, who found the joke insensitive and poorly timed, especially considering the devastation and loss of life caused by the typhoon.
Meanwhile, Niña Jose-Quiambao urged Bayambangeños to be patient as power restoration continues, with only four barangays still without electricity. She acknowledged the struggles of residents, especially those with newborns, and encouraged them to contact the MdR for assistance or stay at evacuation centers if needed. She also reminded everyone to stay safe, as Typhoon Kristine may return due to the Fujiwara effect, bringing more strong winds and rain.
