House Helpers Receive iPhone 16 from Their Employer
JEFF LEONG AND INTHIRA KALANJIAM – A Malaysian couple received widespread praise on social media after they surprised their two domestic helpers with a brand-new iPhone 16. The couple, who are content creators, share their daily lives and travels on their YouTube channel, Jeff & Inthira, which has over 1.19 million followers.
In a video uploaded on September 21, 2024, Jeff and Inthira captured the surprise for their helpers, Sri and Neneng, both from Indonesia, who have been working for them for two years. The couple visited a gadget store to buy the iPhones, showcasing their appreciation for the hard work of their helpers, who handle household chores, cooking, and childcare.
In the video, one of the helpers was seen sitting at a table in the living room while the other was asleep. Inthira woke the sleeping helper, and their young daughter also appeared on the screen. When Sri and Neneng received their gifts, they were overwhelmed with emotion, crying, shouting with joy, and hugging the couple’s children tightly. One of the helpers exclaimed, “This is unbelievable! Thank you so much, madam and sir!” Jeff and Inthira replied, “You are no longer just the domestic helpers. You have become a part of our family.”
In an interview, Inthira explained that some domestic workers in Malaysia are often not allowed to have their own smartphones, as employers sometimes see them as distractions or reasons for leaving their jobs. However, in their household, Sri and Neneng are encouraged to cook what they like and have long breaks.
Inthira emphasized the importance of treating everyone with respect, saying, “My helpers are parents, too, working hard to support their children.” Jeff added that many middle-class employers might unintentionally take their stress out on their helpers and stressed that kindness should go both ways. Their thoughtful gesture has garnered over 167,000 views, 2,300 reactions, and 299 comments on the video, with many netizens praising the couple’s kindness and compassion.
