Metal Railings Fall, Killing 4-Year-Old Child in Cebu City

CEBU CITY – A four-year-old boy named Crismark died on October 14, 2024, in Barangay Subâ when metal railings fell on him.

The incident was caught on CCTV, showing Crismark playing with another child near the railings. In the video, his playmate is seen climbing up and down the railings before they suddenly collapsed, trapping Crismark underneath.

Local residents quickly rushed to Crismark’s aid, taking him to the Cebu City Medical Center. Due to the severity of his head injuries, he was later transferred to Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center. Despite the medical team’s efforts, Crismark passed away shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Crismark had been living under the care of his grandfather, Juanito Sandoval, as his mother worked as a domestic helper in another province. The family is devastated by this tragedy, especially as they were preparing to celebrate Crismark’s fifth birthday on November 7, 2024.

Cebu City Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia extended his condolences to the family and promised financial assistance from the city government to support them during this difficult time. He also assured the public that appropriate actions would be taken if the investigation uncovers any negligence on the part of the fish market management, where the incident occurred.

The Cebu City Police Office, led by Police Station 6’s Deputy Chief, Police Lt. Loreto Tuliao, has initiated a thorough investigation into the incident. They are examining whether safety measures were adequately followed to prevent such accidents.

Juanito Sandoval expressed that he does not intend to file any complaints against the market’s management, instead seeking support from the local government. As of now, the market administrators have not released an official statement about the tragedy. The community mourns the loss of Crismark, hoping this incident will lead to stricter safety standards to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
