Teacher Who Mistakenly Named First Female PH President Speaks Out

Teacher Speaks Up After Being Bashed for Saying Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is the First Female PH President

GLORIA OR CORY? – The teacher who mistakenly named the first female Philippine president has spoken.

A teacher named Tony, who participated as a contestant on the “Throwbox!” segment of “It’s Showtime” on September 19, made headlines after giving the wrong answer to the question about the first female president of the Philippines.

When asked who the first woman to hold the presidency was, Tony mistakenly answered “Gloria Macapagal Arroyo,” although the correct answer is former President Corazon “Cory” Aquino. This error sparked discussions on social media, particularly because Tony holds a master’s degree, is pursuing a doctorate, and has been teaching for eight years.

In response to the criticism, Tony released a video apologizing for the mistake. He expressed disappointment that people judged his entire character based on one error, noting that everyone is still capable of making mistakes. He emphasized how disheartening it was that his identity seemed to be reduced to that single moment on national television.

Tony explained that the pressure of the game show, particularly the limited five-second time frame to answer, contributed to him giving the wrong response. He urged people to consider how difficult it can be to think clearly under such circumstances. While the question may seem basic, he highlighted that the pressure of the situation could easily lead to a mistake.

“Sana naisip ninyo na what if you are in that position, na yah, that’s a very basic question but dumadaloy sa’yo ‘yung pressure, so hindi ka makakasagot talaga,” Tony said. “It’s really saddening for people na yung mistake na yun, it will really really be taking against you,” he added.

Despite the backlash, Tony remains determined to grow from the experience. He expressed his commitment to continuing his self-improvement, learning, and professional development. He stressed that making a mistake does not define his worth or his capabilities as an educator. Rather than dwelling on the error, Tony plans to focus on becoming a better version of himself.
