Basketball Player John Amores Involved in a Shooting Incident
JOHN AMORES – The PBA player surrendered to the police on Thursday morning following his involvement in a shooting incident in Laguna.
Amores, accompanied by his brother, turned himself in without commenting about the situation. He now faces an attempted murder charge and will undergo an inquest proceeding.
The incident arose from a heated argument between Amores and the victim, Lee Cacalda, during a basketball game in Barangay Salac. As tensions escalated, Amores allegedly told Cacalda, “Du’n tayo magsuntukan” (Let’s go somewhere to fight).
Cacalda followed Amores to Barangay Maytalang Uno, where they both got off their motorcycles. At that point, Amores reportedly shot Cacalda with an unidentified handgun. Despite the shooting, Cacalda did not sustain any injuries. Amores fled the scene, heading toward Pagsanjan.
Reports of the incident surfaced on social media, with CCTV footage of the altercation widely shared. Authorities initiated a “dragnet operation” to locate Amores before his eventual surrender.
This latest controversy comes just two years after John Amores’ infamous outburst during an NCAA basketball game when he played for Jose Rizal University. That incident, which involved a violent altercation during a game against the College of St. Benilde, led to his ban from the collegiate league. Despite this, NorthPort selected him in the fifth round of the 2023 PBA Rookie Draft, giving him a second chance in professional basketball.
Amores had displayed good behavior throughout his rookie season in the PBA, including his participation in Batang Pier’s final game in the Governors’ Cup against TNT Tropang Giga at Smart Araneta Coliseum just days before the shooting. However, this latest incident may put his PBA career in jeopardy. According to GMA News, NorthPort has yet to release an official statement regarding the matter.
Amores’ involvement in the shooting incident, combined with his past controversies, has cast doubt on his future in the PBA.
