Mark Andrew Yulo is Reportedly Running for Councilor
MARK ANDREW YULO – The father of two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo, is reportedly considering a run for councilor in their district in Manila City.
His wife, Angelica Yulo, hinted at this through an Instagram post promoting their community outreach, the “Libreng TABAS Project,” a free haircut event organized by Mark Andrew. In her post, Angelica referred to her husband as “Konsi,” sparking speculation that he might pursue a political role. The event also featured a performance by Jojo Mendrez, the “revival king,” to engage the local community.
The Yulo family, residents of Malate in Manila’s 5th district, has drawn attention not just for their community work but also due to their son, Carlos Yulo, who recently earned two medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics. However, the family has faced public controversy, as Carlos accused his parents of mishandling his earnings from various competitions. His parents denied these claims and demanded a public apology from their son, with Mark Andrew addressing the issue on social media.
The strained relationship between Carlos and his family stems from financial disagreements and feelings of neglect. While Carlos, a world-renowned gymnast, has received significant support from sponsors, his coach, and the Japan Olympic Association, his family has publicly expressed dissatisfaction, claiming they’ve been sidelined and unsupported by him. Carlos, who has been training in Japan since 2016, has remained mostly silent on the matter, focusing on his gymnastics career.
Attorney Raymond Fortun, who has been involved in the family’s issues, revealed further details about their grievances. The conflict has sparked public discourse on the pressures successful athletes face to financially support their families and the emotional strains that arise when these expectations are unmet. Despite the familial tensions, Carlos continues to pursue his athletic goals on the global stage.
