1975 10-Centavo Coin Without Mint Mark Worth PHP28M Now
RARE COIN – A 1975 ten-centavo coin, without a mint mark, has gained significant value, now estimated at PHP28 million.
Three sisters from Toledo, Ohio, inherited the coin, which was kept in a bank vault for decades. Initially, they were unaware of its true worth. After 40 years, it was confirmed as a rare and valuable item.
Ian Russell, president of GreatCollections Coin & Paper Money Auctions, described the coin as “extraordinarily rare.” Minted by the U.S. Mint in San Francisco in 1975, its current value is around US$500,000. Russell’s company is conducting an online auction for the coin, which will end in October 2024.
The coin’s exceptional value stems from its lack of the “S” mint mark, which identifies it as having been made at the San Francisco Mint. Records indicate only two such coins exist, making them extremely rare and highly desirable among collectors. One was sold for US$456,000 in 2019 and is now with a private collector.
The sisters’ brother, who passed away, had kept the coin for years before it was passed on to them. The coin was bought by their family in 1978 for US$18,200 after it was discovered to have an error. The family used the coin as a financial safety net due to its collectible value.
Russell noted that serious collectors were aware of the existence of two 1975 coins without the mint mark but had no proof of ownership. When the sisters were informed about the coin’s current value, they were astonished. According to PEP.ph, the coin, now known as the “1975 ‘no S’ proof dime,” was displayed at a coin show on September 12, 2024, in Tampa, Florida, and will be auctioned to the highest bidder by the end of October.
