The renewed attention stems from various “Gen Z” social media influencers expressing admiration for Rico Yan’s charisma and looks, despite never having experienced his presence firsthand. This admiration has manifested in TikTok videos and social media posts where individuals visit Rico Yan’s grave, hugging his tombstone and interacting with his portrait.
The trend has sparked a backlash from some netizens who find the actions disrespectful and excessive. They criticize the behavior as insensitive and inappropriate, questioning the motives behind seeking clout from visiting a celebrity’s grave. Some comments on social media express disbelief and discomfort at the level of obsession and the invasion of privacy that visiting Rico Yan’s resting place represents.
Rico Yan was a well-known Filipino actor and commercial model who gained fame in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Born Ricardo Carlos Castro Yan on March 14, 1975, he began his career after being discovered as a commercial model while studying at De La Salle University. His breakthrough came when he joined Star Circle Batch 1 (now Star Magic) in 1995, marking the start of his journey to becoming a popular matinee idol in Philippine entertainment.
