Chavit Singson Discusses His Involvement with Miss Universe and Korean movie, Vagabond
CHAVIT SINGSON – The former Ilocos Sur governor discussed various aspects of his involvement with the Miss Universe pageant, his financial contributions to it, and his opinions on the evolving eligibility criteria for contestants.
Singson, who is widely recognized for his political and business ventures, mentioned that despite the significant expenses incurred in hosting the Miss Universe 2016 in the Philippines, he saw it as a worthwhile investment to boost tourism. He reportedly spent approximately $20 million on the event, covering costs for airplanes, yachts, vehicles, and more, far exceeding his initial expenditure of $12 million. This figure converts to nearly PHP 1.2 billion based on current exchange rates.
The former governor emphasized that the expenditure was intended to promote the Philippines as a tourist destination, comparing his strategy to Singapore’s approach of hiring Taylor Swift to attract tourism, which was government-sponsored. Singson suggested that similar government support would be beneficial for the Philippines.
In terms of pageant involvement, Singson has had a complex relationship with Miss Universe. Although he has been repeatedly invited to participate and influence the event’s location, he expressed a lack of time to engage fully. Additionally, regarding the new Miss Universe policies that accept candidates who are transgender, married, have children, or are seniors, Singson appeared nostalgic for the previous criteria that focused on younger, unmarried women. He voiced concerns that these changes might undermine the traditional image and integrity of the pageant.
Singson also briefly touched on rumors linking him romantically to previous Miss Universe winners Pia Wurtzbach and Catriona Gray, dismissing them as unfounded and stating his relationship with them was purely platonic.
Apart from his pageant involvement, Singson is co-producing the second season of the South Korean series “Vagabond,” featuring Lee Seung-gi, who also endorses Singson’s business. He mentioned plans to incorporate Filipino artists into the project, with a projected budget of around $20 million for the season, and he is considering a personal contribution of about $1 million. This collaboration aims to showcase the Philippines and potentially include local stars in significant roles, enhancing the series’ appeal in the country.
