Megan Young faced criticism for fixing Miss Botswana’s hair
MEGAN YOUNG – The Miss World 2013 faced criticism from a content creator for fixing Miss Botswana’s hair during the recently concluded Miss World 2024.
Megan’s hosting at the 71st Miss World, held on March 9, 2024, in Mumbai, India, garnered praise online. However, she faced criticism for her gesture towards Lesego Chombo, Botswana’s representative and a Top 4 candidate. During the question-and-answer segment, Megan noticed some strands of hair on Chombo’s forehead and adjusted them. She said, “Let me fix your hair a little bit.”
However, a Botswanian content creator accused Megan of racism, claiming that the Filipina beauty queen was undermining Chombo’s confidence and implying that her hair was not natural but a wig. “In my own opinion, that presenter wasn’t fixing Lesego’s hair. And there was nothing wrong with her hair. The presenter wanted to kill Lesego’s confidence and also show judges that it wasn’t her natural hair but a wig.”
The content creator faced backlash, receiving thousands of hate comments, but persisted in attacking Megan. In another tirade, the creator accused Megan of cultural superiority.
“Hey Megan Young I can see you are a woman of many talents. One moment you are an MC, the next moment you are Lesego’s hairstylist. I won’t be surprised if you are witch too,” the content creator said. “I mean what’s your business touching our Queen’s forehead and hair at that critical moment of the competition and right on centre stage? Nywee nywee it’s your Philippines culture, who told you it’s our Botswana culture? Or you think your white culture is superior than our black culture?” the content creator added.
The accusations were baseless, as Chombo’s hair was not a wig, and Megan’s actions were innocent. The intense backlash deeply affected the content creator, who faced severe criticism from Megan’s supporters.
Despite the onslaught of hate, Megan’s defenders remained steadfast, denouncing the baseless allegations and offering support to the former Miss World. The content creator’s anger was evident, but Megan’s supporters remained resolute in their defense of her character.
