Malcolm Conlan expresses disappointment in Benny Blanco over his ‘Jollibee’ review
MALCOLM CONLAN – The British content creator, also known as “British Filipino-at-heart,” has expressed his disappointment toward US producer Benny Blanco.
This reaction stemmed from a viral video where Benny Blanco tried various offerings from Jollibee, a Filipino fast-food restaurant, including their Pinoy-style spaghetti, and clearly showed his dislike for it, even spitting it out.
Following the backlash, Benny attempted to make amends by trying other Pinoy dishes from highly-rated restaurants in Los Angeles in a subsequent TikTok video. He expressed newfound appreciation for these dishes, including the Spicy Chicken Sandwich, lumpia, longganisa, chicken inasal, and pansit.
While some TikTok users acknowledged Benny’s efforts to make up for his initial critique, others felt that the damage had already been done. Some even jokingly suggested he try balut, a controversial Filipino delicacy, to fully make amends.
Among those frustrated with Benny is British content creator Malcolm Conlan. In a Facebook post, Malcolm conveyed his displeasure, emphasizing the cultural significance of Filipino spaghetti and its popularity within Filipino cuisine. He pointed out that while not everyone may enjoy Filipino food, Benny’s reaction appeared disrespectful to Filipino culture and traditions. Malcolm specifically urged Benny to apologize for the offense caused to many Filipinos due to his apparent disregard for their culinary heritage.
Aside from his post, he also shared a video to elaborate his feelings toward Benny. Then, he explained as to why he posted his reaction video. “Why did I make the reaction video too #BennyBlanco, it’s simply to inform him that he was wrong and should NEVER be disrespectful about anyone’s food. #jollyspaghetti has been my favourite ever since. Insult my favourite food, insults me and my love for the Philippines and its cuisine!!!” he said.
Meanwhile, despite the widespread criticism from netizens, Benny Blanco has yet to respond publicly to the backlash.
