Online sale of firecrackers is banned
PNP – The Philippine National Police emphasized on Thursday the importance of refraining from purchasing firecrackers online due to potential safety hazards.
According to Col. Jay Guillermo, head of the cyber response unit within the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group, firecrackers bought online might pose risks, as they could accidentally ignite and cause accidents during delivery. Guillermo highlighted that, unlike physical stores, online firecracker sellers do not undergo inspections and secure permits.
In a TeleRadyo Serbisyo interview, he stated, “Wala pong authorized ng gobyerno na magbenta ng paputok dahil ang iniisip po natin dito… ay yung seguridad ng mga bumibili at saka yung mga taong madadaanan ng paputok kung saan man ninyo dadalhin.”
Guillermo strongly advised the public against purchasing pyrotechnics online and encouraged them to visit physical stores to ensure the safety of their purchases. Notably, at least three online firecracker sellers have been apprehended since December 19, as reported by the police official.
Meanwhile, pyrotechnics pose significant safety hazards due to their explosive nature and the potential for accidents. The primary risks include burns, injuries, and fires. Improper handling, such as holding firecrackers in hand or lighting them in close proximity to people, can result in severe burns. Additionally, the unpredictable nature of firecrackers can lead to injuries caused by flying debris or malfunctioning explosives.
Firecrackers are notorious for causing fires, especially in dry and windy conditions. The sparks emitted during ignition can ignite nearby flammable materials, such as dry grass, leaves, or even buildings. This poses a serious threat to both property and human lives.
Moreover, the loud noises produced by firecrackers can cause hearing damage, especially if they are detonated at close range or in confined spaces. This risk is particularly significant for children, who may be more susceptible to hearing damage.
Environmental concerns also arise as firecrackers release pollutants into the air, contributing to air and noise pollution. The chemicals used in the manufacturing of firecrackers can have detrimental effects on air quality and public health.
