Several parts of Davao City experienced massive flooding due to heavy rains
DAVAO CITY – Several parts of the city particularly southern areas, experienced massive flooding due to heavy rainfall that occurred on the night of November 8, 2023.
The unusual and powerful flood washed away numerous vehicles and caused significant damage, particularly in Samantha Homes, Bago Gallera, Davao City. This intense flooding persisted from the night of November 8 into the early hours of Thursday, November 9.
The impact left hundreds of residents stranded, some resorting to seeking safety on the rooftops of their homes. The joint efforts of the Public Safety and Security Office (PSSO), City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), and various volunteer groups were essential in rescuing the flood victims.
John Christian, a resident of Davao, expressed on his Facebook account, that this has never happened in all his years living in Samantha Homes. He noted: “A hell of a nightmare. Anga ani oy, wa naman namao. First time sa ka dugay namo diri sa Samantha.”
To address the situation, the local government of Davao announced the suspension of classes at all levels in both public and private schools within certain barangays affected by the flood. According to SunStar Davao, the affected areas include Brgy. Bago Gallera, Brgy. Bago Aplaya, Brgy. Talomo Proper, Brgy. Matina Aplaya, Brgy. Maa, and Brgy. Baliok in Talomo District, and Brgy. Sto. Nino in Tugbok District.

Stay updated via weather forecasts and emergency alerts, evacuate as instructed, move to higher ground if evacuation isn’t possible, and avoid floodwaters, which can be hazardous even in small amounts. Store emergency supplies and signal for help if needed, especially using a whistle or social media. Check on vulnerable neighbors, obey authorities’ advice, and ensure personal safety. The primary aim during a flash flood is to safeguard oneself and others, emphasizing safety as a priority to prevent perilous situations.
