Iloilo City LGU Offers Permanent Job to Street Sweeper’s Daughter Who Ranked 9th in CPA Exam
The local government unit of Iloilo City offers a permanent job to a street sweeper’s daughter who ranked 9th in the CPA Exam.
A promising “professional career” awaits the 24-year-old Romelyn Gabanto, who secured the 9th spot in the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) licensure examination conducted by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) in September 2023.
Gabanto’s impressive achievement has opened doors for a brighter future, as the local government unit (LGU) of Iloilo City is eager to offer her a permanent job, according to the Philippine News Agency.
“Initially, I offered her a job as a contract of service [employee] because she has yet to take her oath. Once she has taken her oath, she will be a regular in our Accounting [department]. We are very happy, we are very proud. This is our homegrown,” Treñas said.
The CPA board passer is the youngest of four children born to Roland and Milagros Gabanto. Her father, Roland, has been a dedicated street sweeper for 13 years, diligently clearing the roads of their barangay.
Accompanied by her 61-year-old father, Gabanto paid a courtesy call to Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas at the municipal office on Tuesday, October 10, 2023.
During this visit, Mayor Treñas offered a job contract to Gabanto, awaiting only her oath-taking ceremony to make her a permanent staff member within the municipality’s Accounting Department.
Romelyn shared that her greatest motivation to complete her education was her family, particularly her father, who encouraged her to pursue a career in accounting. Her journey from a street sweeper’s daughter to a CPA exam top-notcher is proof of her determination and hard work.
Offering advice to aspiring CPAs, Gabanto stressed the importance of self-discipline, effective time management, and cultivating strong and consistent study habits.
