A Reddit Chat Channel is a space within Reddit communities where redditors like you can engage in a real-time conversation on a variety of different topics.
This new feature can currently be found on the Reddit native iOS and Android apps.
But how does it work?
Redditors like you can access a Reddit community’s public chat channel on its subreddit page and within the chat tab. Messages that appear in your chat tab consist of channels that you have engaged with, such as sending, reacting, or replying to messages.
When you select a community message in your chat tab, you will be directed to the corresponding channel in that subreddit. You can take several actions in a chat channel from the chat action menu, such as using Reddit emojis, reacting to messages, or sharing a link to a specific message within the discussion.
Aside from this, you can also access the action menu by hard-pressing a message. In addition, you can report a chat message in a channel if you need to.
Keep in mind that this feature is currently in Beta phase and it’s supported on Android and iOS. However, redditors like you can see your existing chat channels on new Reddit within the chat tab.
But why can’t you join a chat channel?
Some Reddit communities may require a more established account for users like you to participate in channels. If you’re not able to join a particular chat channel, you may not meet the necessary requirements to chat.
Established account includes a variety of signals such as history of good contributions, verified email or phone number, and past enforcement actions taken on a user’s account.
