Manila Luzon calls for donations for the release of Pura Luka Vega
MANILA LUZON – The drag artist turned to the social media platform Instagram, where he called for donations for Pura Luka Vega’s bail. Pura has been detained at the Manila Police District Station 3 in Quiapo, Manila, since Wednesday.
Pura Luka Vega, whose real name is Amadeus Fernando Pagente, was arrested in connection with his controversial performance of a remix of the “Ama Namin” (Our Father) while dressed in a costume inspired by the Black Nazarene.
Pura is facing charges filed by devotees of the Black Nazarene, known as Hijos del Nazareno, who allege that his performance violated Article 201 of the Revised Penal Code, claiming it attacked their religious beliefs. The bail for Pura’s case has been set at P72,000.
On his Instagram post, Manila Luzon expressed his concern about the situation, stating, “The Art of Drag in the Philippines is under attack.” He emphasized that drag should not be considered a crime and used the hashtag #FreePuraLukaVega to rally support. Manila also provided donation QR codes and account numbers to collect funds for Pura’s bail.
In an interview with “24 Oras,” Pura revealed their surprise at receiving a warrant of arrest, as they had not received a subpoena. He had previously been declared persona non grata in several cities.
In an interview with GMA News Online, Pura explained that his “Ama Namin” performance was not meant to be disrespectful. Instead, it was his way of reconciling his Catholic faith with his identity as part of the LGBTQIA+ community. He viewed his public performance as an expression of God’s love for all, including marginalized groups.
Pura acknowledged that some people found their performance blasphemous, offensive, or regrettable but emphasized their intention to convey a message of inclusion and love. It is worth noting that Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri had previously mentioned the possibility of criminal charges against Pura Luka Vega.
