Rendon Labador reacts to Tim Cone’s message of support for Chot Reyes
RENDON LABADOR – The motivational speaker took to social media wherein he criticized Gilas Pilipinas assistant coach Tim Cone.
Following Gilas Pilipinas’ disappointing 87-68 loss to South Sudan in the FIBA Basketball World Cup, there has been growing pressure for changes within the team, particularly concerning head coach Chot Reyes. Gilas failed to achieve any of its objectives, which included advancing to the second round with two wins, securing a victory in the first round, or at least putting up a strong fight for an Olympic spot.
As the 19th Asian Games approach, some fans are suggesting that Tim Cone take charge, similar to his role during the 30th Southeast Asian Games when he coached the national team. However, Cone, who is currently the lead assistant to Reyes, remains committed to supporting his head coach. He stated, “If Coach Chot goes, I go. Some assistant coaches aspire to become head coaches, but that’s not my goal. I’m here to serve at Coach Chot’s pleasure. I’m only here to support him because I believe in him.”
Despite the team’s poor performance, Cone, one of the most accomplished PBA head coaches, continues to believe that Reyes is the right person for the job. He mentioned that they’ve never been out of any game and acknowledged the difficulty of winning in the World Cup due to the strong competition.
Cone also expressed his view that the criticism directed at Reyes, both on social media and at the venue, has been unfair. He emphasized that coaching decisions can vary widely, and he believes Reyes has done a great job.
After expressing his support for Chot Reyes, Tim Cone faced criticism from motivational speaker Rendon Labador. In the caption of his post, Labador wrote: “SIGE! SUPORTAHAN MO PA YUNG KATANGAHAN NG TROPA MO!!!” He added: “Kaya tayo hindi nananalo kasi inuuna natin emotions natin! Weak coaches!!!” He then called for the resignation of Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes.
