The sweater of Princess Diana was auctioned for PHP 62 Million
PRINCESS DIANA – The famous black sheep sweater worn by the beloved member of the British royal family was recently auctioned for $1.1 million, equivalent to PHP 62 million.
Princess Diana wore the iconic red sweater adorned with white sheep and a single black sheep. She sported this sweater with blue trousers in June 1981 while attending a polo game with Prince Charles.
The sweater was auctioned by the renowned house Sotheby’s during New York Fashion Week in the United States in September. Bidding for the sweater started at $190,000 (PHP 10.6 million) and continued to rise until it reached $1.143 million.
After wearing the sweater, Diana returned it to the designer for repairs due to a hole. It was replaced with a new sweater and sent back to Diana. According to reports, the whereabouts of the original sweater were unknown until it recently resurfaced, still bearing the hole.
Her sweater is said to be the most expensive item ever owned by Princess Diana to be sold at auction, surpassing her aubergine evening gown, created by Victor Edelstein, which sold for $604,000 (PHP 33.8 million) in January 2023. Diana wore this gown in 1991 for an official portrait by Lord Snowdon and again in 1997 for a shoot with Vanity Fair by the renowned fashion photographer Mario Testino.
Meanwhile, Princess Diana of Wales was a member of the British royal family. She was the first wife of King Charles III (then Prince of Wales) and mother of Princes William and Harry. Her tragic death in a car crash in 1997 led to widespread mourning and a lasting impact on the royal family and British society.
