JOEY DE LEON – The veteran comedian and TV host came under fire from netizens due to his “lubid” joke on E.A.T.

During the “Gimme 5” segment on the noontime show E.A.T. on TV5, a contestant was asked to name five things that can be worn around the neck. The contestant seemed to struggle to come up with answers and could only think of “necklace” until time ran out. Many were surprised when Joey jokingly suggested, “Lubid, lubid, nakakalimutan niyo.”

For some netizens, Joey’s choice of words was considered offensive and inappropriate because of the association of a “rope” with the sensitive topic of su*c*de. Critics argued that Joey’s joke was insensitive, especially to those who have lost loved ones to su*c*de.

On the X (formerly Twitter) platform, Joey received criticism from those who had witnessed the incident. “Ang lala ni Joey de Leon, tumandang paurong talaga!” commented one netizen.

Another netizen wrote, Joey de Leon, deboto ka ng Catholic Church di ba? Bakit mo gagamiting punchline ang ‘lubid sa leeg?'” Some called him “basura,” criticized his jokes as “outdated,” and found them “wala talagang sense.”

Meanwhile, netizens have called on the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) to summon the veteran comedian due to his controversial joke.

It’s worth noting that the MTRCB made headlines after imposing a 12-day suspension on the rival noontime show of E.A.T., “It’s Showtime.” This decision stemmed from an incident involving the hosts of “It’s Showtime,” Vice Ganda and Ion Perez, and an act involving licking icing.

This isn’t the first time Joey has faced criticism for comments related to sensitive mental health issues. On Eat Bulaga! on October 5, 2017, he received substantial backlash for stating that depression is “gawa-gawa lang ng mga tao”.
