JIM PAREDES AND BOBOY GAROVILLO – The “Apo Hiking Society” members shared how much the band received from their first gig back in the ‘70s.
The OPM band is set to have a two-night concert for their 50th anniversary this month.
Boboy Garovillo and Jim Paredes guested on the latest episode of “Surprise Guest with Pia Arcangel” podcast on Spotify where the two talked about their first paying gig at that time.
Boboy said that he and his bandmates had a farewell concert in 1973 to say goodbye to their friends. At that time, he said that they’re ready to pursue their own careers.
Jim was going to an exchange study program in Europe, Boboy was going to farm in Negros, Danny Javier was already with a network, and Lito de Joya had already established an ad agency.
“After college, 1973, we had a farewell concert to say goodbye to all our friends, Apo was breaking up,” Boboy said. “So the four of us were splitting up and we decided to have a farewell concert to say goodbye to all our friends from different schools. That was on July 15 and 16 in 1973.“

However, the farewell concert turned out to be a massive success at that time. According to Jim, it was “jam-packed” and it was “storming”.
The OPM band’s first paid gig was for the Philippine Pest Control Association and the gig took place after their farewell show back in 1973. According to Jim, they received PHP 75 for their very first paying gig at that time.
“Alam mo ang ginawa namin sa 75 pesos? Bumili kami ng sigarilyo at hinati-hati,” Jim said.
In the same interview, the two shared a few more trivia about the OPM band – from sharing the reason they started singing to sharing how “Pumapatak ang Ulan” was written on a napkin.
