Despite the controversial aroma of durian, Ery Syarif, the shirtless durian seller, piqued the curiosity of many customers and even built a devoted fan base.
Many people came to his improvised stall to buy the tasty durians on offer, and there is even conjecture that Syarif could become a model in the near future, given his ability to effectively advertise a variety of things.
Some people came to his stall only to snap photos with him, although it is hoped that these people either bought durians themselves or successfully persuaded their friends to do so.
However, netizens’ views have been divided, with some expressing disinterest or discomfort with the shirtless photographs. Local officials also expressed their worries, urging that Syarif follow the rules and resume wearing a shirt when conducting business.
In response to the criticism, the durian salesman justified his actions, claiming that he did not feel he was breaking any laws. Nonetheless, continuing to sell durians without a shirt could result in serious legal consequences for Syarif.
Section 35 of the Terengganu Syariah Law Enactment expressly prohibits the public display of specific body parts. While being shirtless may appear to be a small offense, it is nevertheless a violation of the law.
