Aiko Melendez TikTok issue
AIKO MELENDEZ TIKTOK ISSUE – QC Vice Mayor Gian Sotto and Zambales Cong. Jay Khonghun defended the actress-turned-politician and other councilors.
Vice Mayor Gian G. Sotto to issue a statement via Facebook to defend Aiko and others. VM Sotto clarified that no internal rules or procedures were violated by the councilors involved. He mentioned that the circulating guidelines, which still mention outdated terms like “beepers,” do not impose restrictions on the creative display of talents when the council is not in session.
He emphasized that the council values the artistic personalities of its members and highlighted the achievements of the 22nd Quezon City Council in passing numerous significant ordinances and resolutions related to mental health, local businesses, social services, education, and traffic management.
Congressman Jay Khonghun, Aiko’s boyfriend, also addressed the issue on Facebook. He corrected a statement made by former COMELEC Commissioner Rowena Guanzon, stating that the videos were filmed at the Quezon City Session Hall, not the Plenary Hall of the House of Representatives. Congressman Khonghun defended Aiko and the other officials, stating that they did not violate any internal rules or procedures and that the videos were recorded before their scheduled session.
Congressman Khonghun urged social media users to refrain from spreading misinformation and launching personal attacks. He posed a question, asking whether they preferred a public official who posts TikTok videos for fun or one who engages in corruption. He emphasized the need to distinguish between appropriate artistic expression and recognizing the proper time and place for such activities.
