Davao Oriental Fishing Boat Accident – 2 Dead, 7 Missing

Fishing boat accident leaves 2 dead and 7 missing in Davao Oriental

DAVAO ORIENTAL FISHING BOAT ACCIDENT – Two Filipino fishermen have lost their lives, and seven others are currently missing after their boat capsized off the coast.

The Philippine Coast Guard reported the incident on Friday and confirmed that a search operation is still underway in the open sea. Following the incident, fourteen out of the twenty-three crew members aboard the Genesis 2 were successfully rescued by nearby fishing vessels. The incident occurred in the early morning hours on Thursday, approximately 337 kilometers east of Mindanao, the main southern island of the Philippines.

As the vessel remained partially submerged in the Philippine Sea, one of the fishermen’s bodies was recovered on Thursday. A second body was found early on Friday, according to Dandy Orcales from the Philippine Coast Guard in Davao Oriental province, as he informed AFP.

Efforts to locate the remaining seven missing individuals are ongoing, with assistance provided by five fishing vessels from the same company. Orcales mentioned that the investigation into the cause of the accident is currently underway.

The fishing company involved in this incident is located in the southern port city of General Santos. The Philippines, consisting of over 7,000 islands, has a history of poor maritime safety, with numerous casualties occurring each year in sea accidents, primarily involving wooden-hulled outriggers used for fishing or inter-island transportation.
