In Iloilo, at least 3 died after being hit by lightning
LIGHTNING STRIKE – Three people, including a pregnant woman, were killed, while nine others were injured after being struck by lightning in Banate, Iloilo.
A lightning strike occurs when there is an electrical discharge during a thunderstorm. It is caused by an imbalance of electrical charges between the ground and the atmosphere, typically within a thundercloud. This imbalance creates a pathway for a rapid flow of electrons called a lightning bolt, which can travel through the air or conductive objects.
Lightning strikes are powerful and dangerous, with extreme heat that can surpass the temperature of the sun’s surface. The discharge produces a bright flash of light and the accompanying sound of thunder due to the rapid expansion and contraction of air.
Bolt strikes pose risks to life and property, so it is important to take precautions during thunderstorms, seeking shelter indoors and avoiding open spaces, tall objects, and bodies of water. Lightning protection systems, such as lightning rods and surge protectors, are used to minimize damage to structures and electrical systems.
