After 20 years and 6 takes, Roberto Suarez II finally passed the Bar exam
BAR PASSER – After 20 years and six attempts, 55-year-old Roberto Suarez II from Bulacan has finally passed the 2022 Bar Exam.
Roberto earned his law degree from the Philippine Law School in Pasay at the age of 34 in 2002. However, he was unsuccessful in the bar exams in 2003, 2004, and 2006. He decided to take a break from the bar exams for some time.
After 11 years, he resolved to try again in 2017 and 2019, but he still did not pass. According to his daughter Kath, who shared the story on TikTok, Roberto balanced his review for the bar exam while working full-time as a Court Decongestant Officer at the Municipal Trial Court in Sta. Maria, Bulacan.
Kath, who is a second-year Nursing student and also works as a financial advisor, shared that it took more than a decade before her father resumed taking the bar exam. “20 years in the making. Between those years, we hit rock bottom kaya ang layo ng agwat ng take niya. 2006 yung last, then 2017 na ang next. 11 years. Who would have thought na ibibigay din pala talaga sa tamang panahon? After 20 years, after ng 6th try?” she wrote in her caption.
Despite his busy schedule, Roberto continued to serve the church as part of the lectors and commentators. He had to balance these responsibilities with his bar exam review. Roberto set aside his obligations to the church to prioritize his review for his fourth and fifth takes, but he still did not pass. On his sixth attempt, he continued to serve the church while reviewing, and he finally achieved his dream of becoming a lawyer.

The bar exam results were released two days before Roberto’s 55th birthday. Even though it took him two decades and six attempts, Roberto never stopped pursuing his dream. “Keep your passion burning to fulfill your dreams. There are only 2 things that can prevent you from becoming a lawyer: 1.) Stop taking the bar exam, [and] 2.) Death,” he said in an interview with The Summit Express.
