PhilHealth President and Chief Executive Officer Emmanuel Ledesma Jr. said that this is in line with its commitment to “implement several enhancements this year” in its benefit packages

In a press briefing on February 15, Ledesma said that the state health insurer will expand the coverage for outpatient hemodialysis from 90 to 156 sessions.

Ledesma added that the increase in the number of sessions covered is based on “standards for adequate dialysis” which requires 3 four-hour sessions per week for chronic kidney disease stage 5 patients.

Also, Ledesma encouraged the public to also avail of the state health insurer’s other “renal replacement therapy”.

According to PhilHealth Senior Vice President Israel Francis Pargas, the state health insurer is targeting to officially issue the new policy “before August”.

Remember our dialysis covers 90 sessions right now and basically it will end up to second sem[ester] or at least until August… So we have the time until the second sem to make sure na yung 156 mailabas natin,” he said. “Kasi iyon pong initial coverage natin pagdating sa dialysis is up to 90 sessions and that again will last until July or August of this year and every year thereafter.

Also, Pargas said that they’re hoping to officially issue the new policy “the soonest” in order to make sure that their institutions are actually ready and their people and dialysis patients are already informed.

Meanwhile, Ledesma said that the state health insurer will be reviewing its benefit packages for COVID-19 in line with the current coronavirus situation in the Philippines.
