Goody Two Shoes Definition, Sentence Examples

GOODY TWO SHOES MEANING – Find out what goody two shoes really mean. Example sentences of this idiomatic expression can also be found here.

The origins of the phrase “goody two shoes” are literary in nature. It was inspired by a story called “The History of Little Goody Two-Shoes,” which was anonymously published in 1765 and was about an orphan girl who used to wear only one shoe. However, this was not the original source of the phrase.

The idiom predates the 1765 narrative. For example, “Voyage to Ireland in Burlesque,” written by Charles Cotton in 1670, contains the phrase. Before it was published, the story of the young orphan girl was most likely told orally. People considered the narrative a good children’s story many years after it was published, and because of its length, it is regarded as the first novel for minors. In terms of plot, the story is similar to Cinderella’s. The plot of the narrative corresponds to the phrase’s current meaning, which is someone who is exceedingly virtuous.
