Former PBA player Terry Saldaña passes away
TERRY SALDAÑA – The former Barangay Ginebra San Miguel player who’s also known as “Plastic Man” has passed away at the age of 64.
His death was confirmed by PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial, who was able to talk to Ed Cordero, former teammate of Saldaña in Toyota.
It can be recalled that it was just last year when the late former PBA player asked for financial help because of his “lingering kidney ailment”.
Dubbed as Plastic Man of the PBA for his twisting hang-time shots, Terry Saldaña was a former player of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel. He played in the premiere basketball team from 1983 to 1987 and 1997 to 1998 along with playing coach Robert Jaworski.
He started playing in the Philippine Basketball Association when he was picked by Toyota in 1982. He was supposed to hailed as Rookie of the Year, however, he figured in a brawl against the visiting South Korean national team (led by Lee Chung-hee) in the 1982 PBA Invitationals.
In 1987, Terry Saldaña suffered one of the most gruesome PBA injuries when he overextended and violently twisted his knee while attempting to block a shot attempt. He, on the other hand, miraculously recovered from what many thought was a career-ending injury and went on to play in the PBA for at least 16 seasons as a power forward.
Aside from Toyota and Ginebra, he also played under bastketball teams; Swift (1993) and Batang Red Bull (2000). His last basketball stint was being the assistant coach to Wang’s Basketball of D-League in 2018.
