To recall, Catapang was appointed as BuCor OIC following the suspension of then-director general Gerald Bantag.

During the culminating activity at the Bureau of Corrections on Monday, the Justice Secretary said that he’s just counting the hours until he gets the signed appointment from President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

According to a report, the Justice Secretary said in an ambush interview that it may be “a matter of hours” or until Tuesday.

Catapang, for his part, extended his gratitude to the President. He said that the people in the Bureau of Corrections know that he only went there to work.

Prior to working for the Bureau of Corrections, Catapang served as the chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) under the administration of the late president Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.

Bantag was suspended last October 2022 following the death of Jun Villamor, the inmate who allegedly acted as the “middleman” in the killing of broadcaster Percy Lapid. He is also facing complaints of murder.

Last week, the Department of Justice placed the suspended BuCor chief on a “90-day preventive suspension without pay” for allowing a news channel to interview inmate Jovito Palparan while detained at the New Bilibid Prison.
