Remulla, 39, the eldest son of the Philippines’ justice secretary, Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla, was acquitted less than three months after a case was filed against him last October 14, 2022.

“Wherefore, premises considered, accused Juanito Jose Remulla III y Diaz is acquitted of the crime of violation of Section 11, Article 2 of Republic Act No. 9165, on the ground of reasonable doubt,” the Las Piñas City Regional Trial Court Branch 197 acting Presiding Judge Ricardo A. Moldez II noted in his ruling.

Pearlito Campanilla, one of Remulla’s attorneys, claimed that the court had cleared his client since it had been established that he was not the suspected importer of kush or high-grade marijuana. In October 2022, Remulla’s son was detained when officials confiscated two packets thought to contain kush worth P1.3 million.

Campanilla continued by stating that the name or identity on the box’s shipment form was incorrect. Instead of Juanito Jose Remulla III, the identification read “Jose Juanito Remulla.”

The lawyer said that the court also brought up concerns about Remulla’s chain of custody. According to Campanilla, the court ruled that the authorities violated the chain of custody requirements outlined in Section 21 of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. Remulla will be promptly released from detention as per Campanilla.
