Due to its qualification against possible candidates with HIV/AIDS, Binibining Pilipinas was accused of discrimination
BINIBINING PILIPINAS – The most prestigious beauty pageant in the country has been accused of discrimination against possible candidates with HIV/AIDS.
The Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BPCI) has started accepting application for the 2023 edition of the Binibining Pilipinas. The dealine for the submission of application among women who aspire to have a pageant title and represent the country in international beauty pageants has been set on January 31, 2023.
But what is considered the most prestigious beauty pageant in the Philippines has been marred by controversy because of a part of its Certification and Warranty of Information/Statements.
It is stated: “I am in good health, psychological and physical health, and that I have never been sick or have been hospitalized for Cancer, Epilepsy, HIV, AIDS, any heart ailment, a disease involving the gastrointestinal system or any other disease that will impair my mental, psychological and/or ph health or condition.”
It drew criticism from netizens. According to them via PEP.ph, it is a form of discrimination, specifically to those who are positive of HIV/AIDS.
HIV/AIDS awareness is part of BPCI’s long-standing advocacy. It is also being advocated by past Miss Universe winners Catriona Gray (2018) and Pia Wurtzbach (2015). This could be the reason why the organization is heavily criticized.
Critics encourage beauty pageant supporters not to let the alleged discrimination and inhumane treatment of HIV/AIDS positive people by BPCI go unnoticed.
Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BPCI) has yet to issue any statement regarding the criticism that the pageant has been receiving.
