Arroyo previously served as Philippine President from 2001 to 2010 and was also the Speaker of the House during the tail end of the 17th Congress. She is the president emeritus of the Lakas-CMD (Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats) party.

In a statement to House of Representatives reporters on Wednesday afternoon, Arroyo said that her wish for Filipinos this holiday season was for them to “never lose sight of the lessons of Christmas” amidst their many problems.

The Pampanga 2nd district Representative said that people should recall how the Christ Child “brought together kings and shepherds in a rare display of unity to pay homage to the Savior” as the Christian world celebrates Christmas once again.

As we face our many concerns, may we never lose sight of the lessons of Christmas – to unite for common causes and shared aspirations; to hope and have faith in the Divine Being and in our leaders; and, above all, to ‘love one another’ as the Holy Bible advises us,” she said.

Earlier this year, Arroyo defended the House measure proposing the establishment of a sovereign wealth fund called “Maharlika Wealth Fund”.

At that time, she said in a statement that the success of any fund, sovereign or private, “lies in the quality of its management”. She also said that the Maharlika Wealth Fund would have an established mechanism for future contributions and would also benefit from a centralized, specialized, and accountable management.
