Former Pres. Gloria Arroyo on Ex-Pres. Fidel Ramos: “A giant among our leaders”

GLORIA ARROYO – The 12th President of the country paid tribute to the late former Pres. Fidel V. Ramos who died last Sunday.

The Philippines is now on a state of national mourning following the death of one of its former presidents, the late former Pres. Fidel V. Ramos or also more commonly called “FVR”.

Last Sunday, the family of FVR confirmed that the former President died at the age of 94. Despite his old age, his passing came as a shock to a lot of people since he is known to be physically active.

Countless hearts were left broken by the death of the former President but also greatly inspired by his love for the country and the service he rendered to the people. He served in different positions in the government prior to and after his presidential term from 1992-1998.

During the regime of the late former Pres. Ferdinand Marcos Sr., FVR was the chief constabulary. He and Marcos Sr. were second cousins. He became the 12th president of the country succeeding the late former Pres. Cory Aquino. He was the 2nd president after the People Power Revolution that ousted the Marcoses.

Ramos also served as the chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. He was also a former Defense Secretary and served as the Philippines’ envoy to China in 2016.

Several high-profile politicians including former presidents paid tribute to the late former Pres. Fidel Ramos. One of them is former Pres. Gloria Arroyo, the 14th chief executive of the country.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, in her statement, former Pres. Gloria Arroyo described the late former Pres. Fidel Ramos as a “giant among our leaders” as she tagged that he was a “war hero, model soldier, top-caliber diplomat, pillar of the later-day Philippine democracy and a champion of our early moves towards globalization”.

Arroyo also highlighted the huge role that FVR played in telecommunications calling him “the father of the ubiquitous use of cellphones” who regulated the telecom industry in the country.

“I will forever remember how he threw his full support for me during the failed coups in the later part of my Presidency,” former Pres. Arroyo said.

The former President expressed encouragement to the people to celebrate the life of FVR, the example he set in statesmanship, and the love he has for the country amid the grief of his death.
