The latter found a pack of mango leaves on the shelves and was surprised after he saw the price. The leaves were being sold for $12.99 per pound or P1,600 per kilogram, which is quite unusual.

In the Philippines, most Filipino people consider this type of leaves as trash and end up dumping them. Many of our countrymen were just picking mango fruits from the tree for human consumption.

However, mango leaves contain numerous health benefits for the body. Leaf extract can be used for several treatments and medications with positive effects on the body’s overall wellness.

“In terms of skin whitening, extracts from young leaves of pico and carabao varieties were most potent in inhibiting tyrosinase, the skin darkening enzyme. On the other hand, among the extracts from the mature leaves, the apple mango exhibited the greatest potency. While these extracts are better whitening agent than the ascorbic acid, such is not the case with kojic acid.” DOST said.
