Benilde coach Charles Tiu on John Amores incident: “We’re not out there to start fights or hurt people.”
JOHN AMORES INCIDENT — De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde coach Charles Tiu said that he’s proud of his team’s restraint during the incident.
The basketball game between De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde and Jose Rizal University (JRU) reached an unfortunate end because of an incident involving John Amores with 3:22 left in the game.
John Amores charged towards the Benilde bench and threw punches at several Benilde players including Jimboy Pasturan, Taine Davis, and Migs Oczon.
Tiu, however, was proud to see that most of his players show restraint during the said incident, which resulted in the Management Committee ultimately stopping the basketball game.
Tiu said that they’re trying to play basketball and their goal is to win a championship.

According to a report, the coach of CSB stressed that their focus remained on winning, especially after the team improved to 10-3 and fortified their hold of the 2nd spot.
Tiu also reminded of Amores’ history, recalling his punching incident during Jose Rizal University’s game against University of the Philippines (UP) in the PG Flex Linoleum-UCBL Preseason Tournament last July 26.
“It happens, it’s happened in the past. Obviously, the person involved has been in the same situation before, that he punched a UP player in the preseason,” Tiu said. “It happens sometimes in basketball, it’s physical, but I don’t think there’s any need to charge across the bench if he was being heckled by somebody.”
In a video posted on Inquirer Sports Facebook page, Tiu said that he’s taking out some of the best players in his team “to make sure that they don’t get hurt” because his players were complaining that they’re “being hit all game long”.
