In a bid to prevent unauthorized transactions amidst the proliferation of phishing scams and other types of scams, the company announced last Thursday that it is set to roll out a new security feature on the app.

GCash introduced the “double authentication” feature during the GSafeTayo campaign launch in Makati City.

The said feature is an added layer of authentication where the account holder will have to take a selfie in order to verify the identity of the account holder through facial recognition.

According to a report, the said feature will ensure that only the account owner has the ability to link his account to a specific device.

GCash chief customer officer Winsley Bangit said that the “double authentication” feature removes account owners’ dependence on SMS OTPs (one-time password) and will also provide a unique identifier that can’t be phished by scammers.

We never stop innovating to make sure our 71 million users have the safest and most convenient experience when they use the app,” Bangit said.

The company also signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) in order to strengthen collaboration in going after perpetrators involved in phishing, smishing (SMS phishing), online fraud, e-scams, vishing (voice phishing), and other cybercrimes that take advantage of account holders.
